Julia Westwood is a figurative artist working in Sydney, Australia. With a background in symbolism, semiotics and social research, Julia’s work is characterised by themes of family, memory, nostalgia and mortality. She is particularly interested in cultural dynamics, stories of hardship and adversity, exploring how this can be translated and conveyed through an image. Julia’s professional practice include drawings and paintings in oil, acrylic and ink on a variety of different surfaces such as canvas, board and paper. Inspired by artists such as Frank Auerbach, Marlene Dumas and Laura Lancaster, her work focuses on figurative expressionism, abstraction and gestural mark-making. 

Julia was Artist in Residence at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in 2019, and has subsequently painted several commissioned works for the hospital.

Julia graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from National Art School in Darlinghurst Sydney,
